Redshift's speedy RG instances have landed in GovCloud!

Hi everyone, it's me! Today I've got great news for those of you on the government cloud. Those fast Redshift instances have finally arrived in GovCloud!

What was announced?

From AWS What's New: Amazon Redshift RG instances are now available in AWS GovCloud (US-West) and AWS GovCloud (US-East).

RG instances are data warehouse instances powered by AWS Graviton processors. Compared to the previous-generation RA3 instances, they run data warehouse and data lake workloads up to 2.4x as fast, and at 30% lower price per vCPU. Faster and cheaper at the same time. That's the best of both worlds!

The story so far

RG instances had already been available, but you couldn't pick them in the GovCloud Regions yet. GovCloud is a special set of Regions built for U.S. government agencies and customers who need to meet strict compliance requirements.

So if you were doing data analytics in that kind of environment, you had to keep going with the previous-generation RA3. With this announcement, you can now get the new generation's speed and savings in GovCloud too!

What changes

This is best news for everyone running a data warehouse in GovCloud.

If you already use RA3 clusters, you can upgrade to RG via Snapshot & Restore, Elastic Resize, or Classic Resize. It's nice that you don't have to rebuild everything from scratch.

Dive Deep

Let's look at a few more details.

RG instances include Redshift's own vectorized data lake query engine. It processes Apache Iceberg and Parquet data directly on your cluster nodes. That lets you run SQL analytics across your data warehouse and your data lake with a single engine.

There are two sizes: rg.xlarge and rg.4xlarge.

Pricing is flexible too. Beyond On-Demand, there are 1-year and 3-year Reserved Instances. Payment options are All Upfront, Partial Upfront, and No Upfront.
