Hey everyone, shiichan here! Today I found a fun networking update. It is a new service that connects your sites to AWS with just a few clicks.

What was announced?

AWS announced AWS Interconnect - last mile on AWS' What's New: a fully managed connectivity offering that links your branch offices, data centers, and remote locations to AWS in just a few clicks. This debut is a gated preview with the carrier AT&T as the first partner.

It pairs AWS' cloud with AT&T's broad network footprint to rethink how businesses connect to the cloud.

The story so far

Setting up a private line from your sites to AWS used to be a lot of work. You had to arrange circuits and handle BGP, VLAN, and ASN configuration, all of which take deep networking knowledge, so friction and complexity came with the territory.

What changes

AWS Interconnect - last mile takes that heavy lifting off your plate. You just pick your preferred AWS Region, bandwidth, Direct Connect Gateway ID, and partner subscriber ID. Then AWS generates an activation key that you use to finish provisioning on AT&T's side. Because capacity is pre-provisioned, you can stand up a private, high-speed connection without the usual wait.

Dive Deep

The nice part is that the fiddly network setup is automated for you: BGP peering, VLAN configuration, and ASN assignment. It also supports zero down-time maintenance, is designed for high availability, and is backed by an SLA.
