What was announced?

From AWS What's New: AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery (AWS DRS) is now available in six additional AWS Regions. Here's what got added:

  • Asia Pacific (Bangkok)
  • Asia Pacific (Malaysia)
  • Asia Pacific (New Zealand)
  • Asia Pacific (Taipei)
  • Canada West (Calgary)
  • Mexico (Central)

With this rollout, AWS DRS is now available in 36 AWS Regions total!

The story so far

AWS DRS is a service built to help you recover on-premises and cloud-based applications fast and reliably, using affordable storage and minimal compute. It supports recovery from physical infrastructure, VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, and cloud infrastructure, and you can also recover EC2 instances into a different AWS Region.

Coverage is broad too: it replicates and recovers critical databases like Oracle, MySQL, and SQL Server, plus enterprise applications like SAP. And since drills, recovery, and failback all use the same unified process, you don't need application-specific skillsets to run it.

The catch with disaster recovery services is that having a supported region near where you actually need it matters a lot. If your location wasn't covered before, DRS simply wasn't an option there.

What changes

With these six new regions, AWS DRS becomes a real option in places that weren't covered before. Companies with sites or data centers in Southeast Asia, Oceania, Western Canada, or Mexico can now plan disaster recovery into a nearby region more easily. For organizations that care about latency or data residency, having more choices here is genuinely good news.
