Today I found news that some of you have probably been waiting for: an instance type finally arriving in a region near you!

What was announced?

AWS What's New announced that Amazon EC2 I8ge instances are now generally available in two new regions: AWS Europe (London) and Canada (Central). This isn't a brand-new instance type — it's an existing one expanding to more regions.

The story so far

I8ge instances were already available in other regions as storage-optimized instances, built around AWS Graviton4 processors and third-generation AWS Nitro SSDs. Until now, though, they weren't available in the London or Canada regions, so users based there simply couldn't reach for them.

What changes

With this expansion, users based in Europe or Canada can now take advantage of I8ge's fast local storage while keeping latency low. If you need to keep large datasets within a specific region for compliance or proximity reasons, this gives you a new option you didn't have before.

  • Up to 180 Gbps of network bandwidth, plus a dedicated 60 Gbps for Amazon EBS

These numbers make it clear these instances are built for workloads with heavy random read/write access and a need for consistently low latency on large datasets. With 11 sizes to choose from, you can scale from smaller workloads all the way up to serious database infrastructure.
