Second-Generation AWS Outposts Racks Arrive in AWS GovCloud (US)!

Hi everyone, it's me! Today I've got a nice bit of news for anyone into hybrid cloud with AWS.

AWS What's New aws.amazon.com

What was announced?

According to AWS What's New, second-generation AWS Outposts racks are now supported in both the AWS GovCloud (US-East) and AWS GovCloud (US-West) Regions.

AWS Outposts extends AWS infrastructure, services, APIs, and tools to virtually any on-premises data center or colocation space, giving you a consistent experience across your hybrid environment.

The story so far

Outposts racks were already available connected to commercial Regions, but pairing them with AWS GovCloud (US) wasn't supported. That meant government agencies and public sector organizations that needed on-premises connectivity had no way to run Outposts while also meeting GovCloud's compliance requirements.

What changes

With this update, organizations ranging from startups to enterprises and the public sector can now order Outposts racks connected to the new supported Regions: GovCloud (US-East) and GovCloud (US-West).

Here's where this helps in practice.

  • Workloads that need low-latency access to on-premises systems can run locally, while application management still happens from the home Region
  • Data that needs to stay on-premises for data residency requirements can be managed and processed using AWS services

In short, customers with government or heavily regulated needs can now optimize for both latency and data residency in the same hybrid setup.

Dive Deep

This announcement is mainly about adding Region support; it doesn't mention any new Outposts features, hardware specs, or pricing changes. For details on second-generation rack specs and pricing, it's best to check AWS's FAQ page and other documentation.

Wrap-up

  • Second-generation AWS Outposts racks now support the AWS GovCloud (US-East) and AWS GovCloud (US-West) Regions
  • Startups, enterprises, and public sector organizations can now order Outposts racks connected to these Regions for latency and data residency needs
  • Hybrid setups with local low-latency processing and home-Region application management are now possible in GovCloud too

This one is for anyone exploring hybrid cloud under government or strict compliance requirements!
