AWS Advanced Ruby Driver Wrapper Is GA: Faster Failovers for Your Rails Apps!

Hi, it's Shii-chan! Today's news is a database driver for Ruby fans!

AWS What's New aws.amazon.com

What was announced?

According to AWS What's New, the AWS Advanced Ruby Driver Wrapper is now generally available for use with Amazon RDS and Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL and MySQL-compatible databases.

Why it matters

This driver reduces RDS Blue/Green switchover, Aurora Global Database switchover, and database failover times, which improves application availability.

What changes

The wrapper is natively integrated with Aurora and RDS, so it can monitor database cluster status. During failovers caused by unexpected failures, it can quickly connect to the newly promoted writer.

It also provides aws_postgresql and aws_mysql2 adapters for ActiveRecord, so you can enable it without changing your application code!

Dive Deep

  • It builds on the community pg (PostgreSQL) and mysql2 (MySQL) drivers to add functionality beyond standard connectivity
  • It supports multiple authentication mechanisms, including AWS Secrets Manager authentication and token-based authentication with AWS IAM
  • It is an open-source project under the Apache 2.0 license
  • See the GitHub repository for getting started instructions

Wrap-up

  • A Ruby driver wrapper for RDS / Aurora PostgreSQL and MySQL-compatible databases is GA
  • Shorter switchover and failover times for Blue/Green and Global Database
  • Supports Secrets Manager and IAM authentication
  • ActiveRecord adapters let you enable it with no code changes

This is for anyone running Rails on Aurora or RDS!
