DataSync Enhanced Mode Now Works with FSx for Windows and ONTAP, Plus OpenShift Virtualization Agents!

Hi, it's Shii-chan!

AWS What's New aws.amazon.com

There's a nice update for AWS DataSync Enhanced mode today, so let me walk you through it. If you've ever moved files around, you'll like this one!

What was announced?

According to AWS What's New, AWS DataSync Enhanced mode gained two things:

  • Amazon FSx for Windows File Server and Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP can be used as source or destination locations
  • Enhanced mode agents can run on Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization version 4.20 or later

For example, you can now run Windows-to-Windows transfers, such as from an on-premises file server to FSx for Windows File Server.

The story so far

DataSync has Basic mode and Enhanced mode. Enhanced mode processes data in parallel for higher performance, has no file count limitations, and provides detailed data transfer metrics.

But some location options were not available in Enhanced mode until now. With this launch, you can use the same location options in Enhanced mode as in Basic mode!

What changes

For migrations to FSx for Windows File Server or FSx for NetApp ONTAP, you can now get the benefits of Enhanced mode:

  • Higher performance through parallel processing
  • No need to worry about file count limits
  • Detailed transfer metrics so you can see what's going on

And if your team uses OpenShift Virtualization, you get another place to deploy agents.

Dive Deep

Here are the environments where agents can run now:

  • VMware ESXi
  • KVM
  • Microsoft Hyper-V
  • Amazon EC2
  • Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization (version 4.20 or later)

To get started, choose Enhanced mode when you create a task in the AWS DataSync console. The features are available in all AWS Regions where DataSync Enhanced mode is supported.

Wrap-up

  • Enhanced mode now supports FSx for Windows File Server and FSx for NetApp ONTAP
  • Windows-to-Windows transfers (such as on-premises file server to FSx for Windows) are possible
  • Agents can run on OpenShift Virtualization 4.20 or later
  • Enhanced mode offers the same location options as Basic mode

This is great for anyone moving Windows file servers or ONTAP data to AWS, or running data migrations from OpenShift Virtualization!
