AMI Tags Now Travel With the Image: EC2 Shared Tags Are Here
Hi, it's Shii-chan! I found an announcement that makes tag management after sharing an AMI much easier!
AWS What's NewWhat was announced?
AWS What's New announced AMI tag sharing (shared tags) for Amazon EC2. AMI owners can make selected tags visible to every AWS account the AMI is shared with.
The story so far
When you shared an AMI with another account or organization, its tags did not reach the recipients automatically. You had to build and maintain your own workflow to replicate tags into each account after sharing.
What changes
You no longer need custom tag replication workflows!
- Whether the AMI is shared with an account, across an organization, or made public, a shared tag is shared automatically alongside it
- Recipients can see the owner's tags right away
Dive Deep
Here are the usage and details:
- How to use: add the
ec2:SharedTag/prefix to the tag key - Recipient accounts see the tag as read-only. Only the owner can create, modify, or delete it
- Shared tags count only against the owner's 50 tags per resource quota. Recipients can keep adding their own private tags
- Availability: all AWS Regions
- Cost: no additional charge
Wrap-up
- Shared tags let you show AMI tags to the accounts you share with
- Just prefix the key with
ec2:SharedTag/ - Read-only for recipients, and no impact on their quota
- Available in all Regions at no extra cost
A nice fit for platform teams that distribute AMIs to many accounts!
