EC2 Future-dated Capacity Reservations Can Now Be Postponed!

Hello, it's Shii-chan! Plans change sometimes, right? Here's an EC2 update that helps when they do!

AWS What's New aws.amazon.com

What was announced?

In AWS What's New, Amazon EC2 announced that Future-dated Capacity Reservations now support postponing the start date.

The story so far

Future-dated Capacity Reservations let you secure capacity up to 120 days in advance by specifying the capacity you need, the start date, and a commitment duration.

Being able to move the start date to match a new timeline after your plans change is what this announcement adds.

What changes

If your project schedule slips before delivery, you can postpone the start date to match your new timeline! It's good news if you reserved capacity ahead of a big event or release.

Dive Deep

Here is how postponing works:

  • Request to postpone the start date
  • EC2 presents a quote showing the new start date and the required commitment duration
  • Review and accept the quote
  • EC2 updates your reservation with the new start date

One thing to watch: the commitment duration can increase, depending on when you postpone the start date. Check the commitment duration in the quote before you accept it.

The feature is available to all Future-dated Capacity Reservation customers. Regional availability is on the AWS Capabilities by Region website, and details are in the Capacity Reservation user guide.

Wrap-up

  • You can now postpone the start date of a Future-dated Capacity Reservation
  • EC2 presents a quote with the new start date and required commitment duration
  • The commitment duration may increase depending on the new date
  • Accepting the quote updates your reservation
  • Available to all Future-dated Capacity Reservation customers

This one is for infrastructure folks who reserve capacity early and worry about schedule changes!
