Hey everyone, it's me! Whenever a new Graviton announcement pops up, I just can't help getting excited. Today I want to share news about the latest generation of instances rolling out to four more regions at once!

What was announced?

According to AWS What's New, Amazon EC2 M9g and M9gd instances powered by AWS Graviton5 processors are now available in Europe (Ireland) and Asia Pacific (Singapore, Sydney, Tokyo).

Graviton5 is AWS's fifth generation of custom-designed CPUs, built to deliver the best price performance for memory-intensive workloads.

Why it matters

Every time an instance generation levels up, you get to do more with the same budget, and that's what makes cloud computing exciting for users. This time, the rollout spans multiple regions at once, so teams running global services stand to benefit the most.

What changes

M9g and M9gd instances deliver up to 25% better performance compared to the previous Graviton4-based M8g and M8gd instances, and up to 30% faster performance for databases.

  • M9g: built for memory-intensive applications such as open-source databases, in-memory caches, and big data analytics
  • M9gd: adds local NVMe-based SSD block storage on top of M9g, for workloads that also need high-speed, low-latency local storage for scratch space, temporary files, and caches

Until now, these four regions didn't have access to the latest Graviton5 generation, so this is great news for teams that want a consistent instance type across regions.

Dive Deep

These instances are built on the sixth-generation AWS Nitro System, and they're the first to feature the Nitro Isolation Engine. It uses formal verification to provide mathematical assurance that customer workloads are isolated from each other and from AWS operators, setting a new bar for mathematically proven cloud security.

You can purchase them through Savings Plans, On-Demand, Spot instances, Dedicated instances, or Dedicated hosts.
