What was announced?

This is from AWS What's New. PostgreSQL 19 Beta 4 is now available in the Amazon RDS Database Preview Environment for Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL, letting you evaluate the pre-release version of PostgreSQL 19 on RDS.

The story so far

Beta 3 was previously available in the Preview Environment, and Beta 4 builds further on it. It refines query performance and the autovacuum management capabilities, and rolls in bug fixes and stability improvements found since Beta 3.

What changes

Here's what's new in Beta 4:

  • Fixed reporting in the pg_stat_autovacuum_scores view for TOAST tables
  • Corrected freeze-score scaling, so you can tune autovacuum prioritization properly
  • Parallel autovacuum now shares a rebalanced cost limit across its workers, keeping maintenance on large tables within your configured limits

Check the PostgreSQL community announcement for more details.

Dive Deep

Instances in the Amazon RDS Database Preview Environment are retained for up to 60 days and automatically deleted afterward. Snapshots created in the Preview Environment can only be used within the Preview Environment, so treat it as separate from production. You can still move data in and out using PostgreSQL's dump and load functionality. Pricing follows the standard US East (Ohio) Region rates.

Wrap-up

  • PostgreSQL 19 Beta 4 is now available in the Amazon RDS Database Preview Environment
  • Builds on Beta 3 with query performance and autovacuum management improvements, plus bug fixes
  • Instances auto-delete after 60 days; snapshots stay within the Preview Environment
  • Priced at standard US East (Ohio) rates; use dump/load to move data
  • A good fit if you want to get ahead of PostgreSQL's next autovacuum improvements!
