RDS Proxy Finally Supports SQL Server 2022!
Hi, it's Shii-chan! A nice database update just landed, so let me walk you through it!
AWS What's NewWhat was announced?
In AWS What's New, AWS announced that Amazon RDS Proxy now supports Amazon RDS for SQL Server instances running major version 2022.
RDS Proxy is a fully managed, highly available database proxy that sits between your application and the database, pooling and sharing established connections. That improves database efficiency and application scalability.
The story so far
RDS Proxy wasn't available for SQL Server 2022 RDS instances, so you couldn't get benefits like connection pooling or connection preservation during failover.
What changes
You can now use RDS Proxy with SQL Server 2022 instances.
- Connections are pooled and shared, which helps keep database load down for connection-heavy apps
- With Multi-AZ, RDS Proxy automatically connects to the standby during a failure and preserves application connections
- Failover times can be reduced by up to 83%
Dive Deep
For authentication, standard IAM authentication for SQL Server is supported.
- Your application authenticates to the proxy using AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM)
- RDS Proxy manages database connections using credentials stored in AWS Secrets Manager
You enable it in a few steps on the Amazon RDS console, then point your application to the RDS Proxy endpoint.
Wrap-up
- RDS Proxy now supports RDS for SQL Server 2022
- Connection pooling improves efficiency and scalability
- Multi-AZ failover times drop by up to 83%
- IAM authentication with credentials in Secrets Manager is supported
This is for anyone running SQL Server 2022 on RDS who cares about connection counts and failover stability!
